Sistina Meets the Artist

by Sistina Team 18 Sep 2026

Up next in our Artist Spotlight series, we sit down with talented Artist & Sculptor Raphael Mizzi. We had a lovely time visiting his studio on a hot summer's day where we chatted about his travels & inspiration and his appreciation for our local geology and cultural heritage.

Raphael Mizzi is a Maltese artist and sculptor whose work explores the human figure, nature and the passage of time. Influenced by classical art, archaeology and travel, his practice moves between sculpture and oil painting, often drawing inspiration from the people, landscapes and histories he encounters.

Mizzi began studying stone sculpture at the Malta School of Arts in 2012, later expanding his practice into clay modelling and painting. Since 2019, he has become known for large-scale temporary sculptures created along the Maltese coast using natural materials found on site, allowing the works to gradually erode and return to the landscape.

Travel has also become an important influence on his painting, most recently explored through Seven Encounters, his 2026 exhibition portraying people encountered during an overland journey from Malta to Southeast Asia. His current work brings together classical forms, portraiture and erosion, exploring the traces left by people, nature and time.
